Which norse gods survive ragnarok

There is nothing the gods can do to prevent Ragnarok. The first sign is the murder of the God Baldr, the son of Odin and Frigg which has already happened.

The second sign will be three uninterrupted long cold winters that will last for three years with no summer in between. The third sign will be the two wolves in the sky swallowing the sun and the moon, and even the stars will disappear and send the world into great darkness. At the same time in Hel, will a red rooster warn all the dishonorable dead, that the war has begun. Heimdall will blow his horn as loud as he can and that will be the warning for all the einherjar in Valhalla that the war has started.

The Gods, Baldr, and Hod will be returned from the dead, to fight one last time with their brothers and sisters. Odin will be riding on his horse Sleipnir with his eagle helmet equipped and his spear Gungnir in his hand, and lead the enormous army of Asgard with all the Gods and brave einherjar to the battleground in the fields of Vigrid.

The Giants will together with Hel, and all her dishonorable dead, sail in the ship Naglfar, which is made from the fingernails of all the dead, sail to the plains of Vigrid. The dragon Nidhug will come flying over the battlefield and gather as many corpses for his never-ending hunger. When most of the Gods had perished in the mutual destruction with the Giants, it is predetermined that a new world will rise up from the water, beautiful and green.

And when the battle is over, they will come out and repopulate the earth again. The few Gods who survive will go to Idavoll, which has remained untouched.

And here they will build new houses, the greatest of the houses will be Gimli, and will have a roof of gold. It is in the mountains of Nidafjoll. But there is also a terrible place, a great hall on Nastrond, the shore of corpses. All its doors face north to greet the screaming winds. The walls will be made of writhing snakes that pour their venom into a river that flows through the hall. This will be the new underground, full of thieves and murderers, and when they die the great dragon Nidhug, is there to feed upon their corpses.

What is Ragnarok? Odin will die at Ragnarok Odin and the Fenrir wolf will fight each other to the death and Loki will turn on the Aesir, and fight Heimdall, and they will kill each other. Fenrir, with fire blazing from his eyes and nostrils, will run across the earth, with his lower jaw on the ground and his upper jaw against the top of the sky, devouring everything in his path.

Jormungand will spit his venom over all the world, poisoning land, water, and air alike. The dome of the sky will be split, and from the crack shall emerge the fire-giants from Muspelheim. Their leader shall be Surt , with a flaming sword brighter than the sun in his hand. As they march across Bifrost , the rainbow bridge to Asgard , the home of the gods, the bridge will break and fall behind them.

An ominous horn blast will ring out; this will be Heimdall , the divine sentry, blowing the Gjallarhorn to announce the arrival of the moment the gods have feared. Odin will anxiously consult the head of Mimir , the wisest of all beings, for counsel. The gods will decide to go to battle, even though they know what the prophecies have foretold concerning the outcome of this clash. Odin will fight Fenrir, and by his side will be the einherjar , the host of his chosen human warriors whom he has kept in Valhalla for just this moment.

Odin and the champions of men will fight more valiantly than anyone has ever fought before. But it will not be enough. Fenrir will swallow Odin and his men. Another wolf, Garm , and the god Tyr will slay each other.

The god Freyr and the giant Surt will also be the end of each other. Thor and Jormungand, those age-old foes, will both finally have their chance to kill the other. Thor will succeed in felling the great snake with the blows of his hammer. But the serpent will have covered him in so much venom that he will not be able to stand for much longer; he will take nine paces before falling dead himself and adding his blood to the already-saturated soil of Vigrid.

Then the remains of the world will sink into the sea, and there will be nothing left but the void. Creation and all that has occurred since will be completely undone, as if it had never happened. Some say that that is the end of the tale — and of all tales, for that matter. No matter had strong was the magic rope or chain, Fenrir could easy break out of them. Finally a dwarf created a fetter. The fetter was called Gleipnir, and it was thinner a silken ribbon.

It was made of. When they bound Fenrir with the Gleipnir, the wolf could not break free. Fenrir realised he was trapped, closed his maw with a deafening snap. Tyr lost one of his hands.

Thereafter, Tyr became known as the one-handed god. Balder was the beautiful son of Odin and Frigg. Balder was the brother of Hod and Hermod. His twin brother, Hod was a god suffering from blindness, and therefore, was the god of darkness. While Balder was the most beloved of all the gods. Frigg travelled throughout the world, extracting oath from every creature and inanimate object, to not harm her favourite son. Frigg even made objects like the trees and rocks, to swear not to harm Balder.

Balder became invulnerable to all every weapons and objects. Not even fire or water could hurt Balder. Loki was the god of fire and was commonly known as the Trickster.

Loki often played practical joke on the Aesir, embarrassing the other gods. Loki was mischievous yet he often helped the gods out of trouble. Loki was never considered to be an evil god. Until now. The giants were considered evil and the enemies of the Aesir.

Loki discovered that the only thing that did not swear the oath, was the mistletoe. Frigg considered that the mistletoe was insignificant and could not possibly harm her son, so she did not the plant to swear the oath. One day at Asgard, the gods were playing a game with Balder. They threw all sorts of objects and weapons, as they bounced harmlessly off his body.

Only Hod did not play this game. Loki came before Hod and asked why he did not play with his brother and the other gods. Hod replied that he was blind.

Loki gave Hod a twig of mistletoe and told him to play. The twig flew like a dart and struck him. Balder instantly fell dead to the ground.

Frigg and the other gods watched horrified that the insignificant mistletoe could kill the most favourite god. Frigg was grief stricken and pleaded with her husband to bring her son back. Odin told the other Aesir that one of them must go to Hel Niflheim and ransomed for Balder from Hel , the goddess of the deads.

Hel would allowed Balder to return to Asgard if every creature would weep for Balder, but would keep dead god in Hel if a single creature refused to shed a single tear for Balder. Upon this news, Frigg went throughout the world asking for every creature to weep for Balder. Loki changed himself into a giantess Thokk or Thanks.

Despite Frigg plead to shed a single tear for her son, Thokk or Thanks Loki refused. Hel kept Balder in her domain. Balder was to receive a boat burial. But Hringhorni was the largest ship in the world, and no one could launch it into the sea. So they called upon the giantess Hyrrokkin from Jotunheim to help them. She arrived on a wolf, with vipers as her rein. She only need to touch the ship, for it to roll into the water, but it set fire to the rollers.

Loki changed himself into a salmon and hid Frananger waterfall. The Aesir failed to catch Loki salmon using a net. Loki tried to escape to the sea.

As he leap over the net, Thor caught the salmon by its tail.
