She fixes his nose and sends him on his way but the Gryffindor pupil notes his friend feeling and looking glummer than usual. Tonks suffers from depression during the Half-Blood Prince. Not just because Lord Voldemort is fully back causing havoc around the world, but because Remus Lupin spurns her affections. She develops a big crush on the werewolf and falls deeply in love with him yet Remus, worried about the consequences of her dating a werewolf would be, continuously dismisses her.
Lupin and Tonks end up getting together and later married but their relationship, as you'd expect, doesn't always go plain-sailing. As mentioned above, Remus and Tonks marry in secret after the events of the sixth book and movie. Harry isn't able to come to the ceremony due to the fact he's stuck at Number 4 Privet Drive but he's delighted for the couple nonetheless.
Nympahdora is absolutely thrilled, radiating joy in the aftermath. But Remus cuts a sullen figure and, in the Deathly Hallows book, actually attempts to leave his wife and unborn child behind. Lupin visits Harry, Ron, and Hermione at 12 Grimmauld Place pleading to join them on their adventures. But the Boy Who Lived gives him a stern dressing down, reminding him of his responsibilities and insisting his father would be ashamed of his friend's actions. This leads to Remus staying put and things work out for the best.
We mentioned Tonks and Lupin having a child above and that's another thing the Potter movies, somewhat bafflingly, don't go into. Bellatrix seemed particularly eager to kill her niece whenever they encountered one another especially after Voldemort instructed her to "prune" her family tree, and eventually succeeded. The pair had several duels, and Tonks noted that Bellatrix seemed as keen to kill her as she was to rid the Dark Lord of Harry.
Since her mother was disowned after marrying her father, Tonks's name was not on the Black's family tree. As such, the family house-elf, Kreacher , who was supposed to listen to anyone in the family, refused to take orders from Tonks. Instead, he kept muttering insults about her half-blood status. Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody was Tonks's mentor during her time training as an Auror , and later whilst they were both in the Order of the Phoenix. Despite Moody's surly attitude and behaviour, Tonks was always at ease with him, making funny comments at his opinions and lectures, such as the one he gave Harry on elementary wand-safety the night the Advance Guard escorted him to Grimmauld Place [3].
Other witches and wizards found him too intimidating and weren't brave enough to tease him openly, but because the pair were quite close, Tonks didn't mind laughing at him. For his part, Moody was openly fond of Tonks; Harry Potter once noted that she had been his favourite during their time together at the Ministry. When Tonks was injured during her duel with Bellatrix Lestrange in the Department of Mysteries , Mad-Eye crawled his way to her side in an effort to help her regain consciousness, despite having been injured himself by Antonin Dolohov.
Tonks was devastated by Moody's death in , openly crying in front of the Weasley family and rest of the Order of the Phoenix members. The pair immediately took a liking to each other, and Harry was particularly impressed by Tonks's position as an Auror, as well as her extraordinary Metamorphmagus powers.
At the time of their first meeting Harry Potter was intimidated by the rest of the Advance Guard but not Tonks who was clumsy and funny. Later, during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries , Tonks was among the Order members that came to the rescue of Harry and his friends. Harry was later relieved to hear that she would recover from the injuries she suffered at the hands of Bellatrix Lestrange.
Tonks's friendship with Harry grew for the next two and a half years. In , Harry hoped Tonks would be among the Aurors set to escort him to the Hogwarts Express , though she was not. Shortly after, Tonks rescued Harry on the Hogwarts Express; she performed the counter-curse to remove the Full Body-Bind Curse placed on him by Draco Malfoy , healed his broken nose and ensured he reached safety within Hogwarts.
When Tonks married Remus Lupin in , she was sorry that Harry couldn't attend the wedding due to him being required to remain with his Muggle relatives to ensure the protective charm on him held. Later, when Lupin briefly left Tonks, due to fears that the child she carried would be infected with lycanthropy like himself, Harry was furious with him for leaving his family. It was largely because of Harry's words that Lupin returned to Tonks. In , when she gave birth to a son named Teddy Lupin , both Tonks and Lupin agreed that Harry would be the godfather.
Harry was devastated when he learned that Nymphadora was killed by her aunt, Bellatrix Lestrange. He noted that the grief he felt over the death of Tonks was akin to a physical wound. In memory of both Tonks and Lupin, Harry acted as a father figure to their orphaned son Teddy, who, despite being raised by Tonks's mother, would spend three or four nights a week dining with the Potter and Weasley families.
Tonks met Hermione Granger and Ginny Weasley in the summer of She immediately struck up a friendship with them, acting somewhat like an older sister to the teenagers during their time at Grimmauld Place. Ginny appreciated Tonks since, although she was an adult, she was interested in having fun and taught her how to check if a door had an Imperturbable Charm on it, by flicking objects at the door in question. Hermione liked the fact that Tonks was proof that women could also go high and get good positions after school.
Both, however, liked the fact that she could change her appearance at will, as she entertained them both over dinner by changing her nose into various shapes. In , Ginny revealed that she would prefer Tonks rather than Fleur to marry her brother Bill and be part of their family; Tonks was, albeit distantly, related to Ginny anyway.
Hermione and Ginny somehow felt worried about Tonks being depressed lately, that even affected her magical abilities. The two, however, became glad about her marriage with Remus Lupin in the mid of During the Battle of Hogwarts , they were very devastated to know that she was killed, and mourned on her body together with Remus 's, Fred 's and over fifty others.
She let him know of her feelings, and, although he reciprocated them, he felt that any relationship between the two of them was too dangerous because he was a werewolf. He also felt he was too old for her—being thirteen years older than she was—and too poor due to his difficulties in maintaining a job because of his condition.
She tried on several occasions to convince him otherwise, but he constantly refused her pleas. Tonks became depressed over this, and confided in Molly Weasley. Her emotional state caused her metamorphic abilities to suffer, and her hair became mousy brown rather than its usual pink although it is possible that this is just due to her either wanting to look more like her husband or her misery at him not loving her appearing deliberately.
While on Hogsmeade duty, Tonks was informed that a werewolf had been killed by Fenir Greyback , and she showed great concern by immediately contacting Dumbledore, to confirm whether or not it had been Lupin who was killed. Her Patronus also changed, resembling a werewolf that showed her love for Remus. In , following the death of Albus Dumbledore and the scarring of Bill Weasley , Tonks openly declared her love for Remus, citing that Fleur Delacour still loved Bill despite the nature of his injuries and the possibility of werewolf contamination.
Remus protested that the situations were not the same, but eventually relented and the two began a relationship [4].
They were married quickly, in a quiet ceremony in the summer of , and Tonks became pregnant shortly after. Remus, fearing that his child would be a werewolf , was initially horrified at the prospect, believing he had put both Tonks and his unborn child in great jeopardy. They split up just after Bill and Fleur's wedding, and Tonks went to stay with her parents.
However, they reconciled sometime before Christmas, after Harry and Remus had argued over his responsibilities as a husband and father at Grimmauld Place. After this on the radio station Potterwatch, Remus said that if he could talk to Harry then, he would have told him to follow his instincts because they are almost always right, it can be assumed that he was talking about returning to Tonks. The couple's son, Ted Remus Lupin , was born just after Easter, , named after Tonks father who had been killed a few weeks earlier by Snatchers and his father Remus.
Sadly, the family would not have long together. During the Battle of Hogwarts , both Tonks and Remus were killed [5]. Teddy was raised by his grandmother, Andromeda , and spent a lot of time with his godfather, Harry [7]. Tonks and fellow Order member Molly Weasley had a rather close relationship. Though there was a significant difference in age between the two, the pair often confided in one another; several people suspected that Molly hoped her son Bill Weasley would fall in love with Tonks, rather than marry Fleur Delacour.
Molly appeared to be the only person that Tonks confided her love of Remus Lupin to, and was noted by Harry Potter as acting somewhat frosty to Lupin during the Christmas holidays, though he misinterpreted the reason why.
Molly often invited Tonks to dine with the Weasley family , and she was always a welcome guest at the events held by the Weasley matriarch. Indeed, Mrs Weasley appeared to be Tonks closest adult friend. For her part, Molly reacted heatedly to disparaging remarks made by Fleur in regards to Tonks, which is indicative of the high opinion she held of Tonks. At the conclusion of the Battle of Hogwarts , it was Molly who duelled and killed Tonks's murderer Bellatrix Lestrange.
In addition to the fact that as Harry Potter's godson, he frequented Harry and Ginny's house. This scene is a much better introduction to the Auror as it points toward her skills as well as her personality.
She's often at Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place, and there's at least one scene where Harry witnesses her yawn because she's exhausted from being up all night. Then she knocks over a chair as she tries to pull it out from the table. While their attraction is evident in the films since Tonks outright says they've married, calling Remus, who's never been a joker, "My husband, the joker," there's a lot of tension in the books speculating who Tonks might be in love with instead.
This is not just a fun fact about the Auror, but a tidbit that's particularly interesting since she IS an Auror. She still manages to do an exceptional job, even though she says she "nearly failed on Stealth and Tracking.
I'm dead clumsy, did you hear me break that plate when we arrived downstairs? The Tonks family dynamic is much more important in the books, and they are mentioned many times, from the demise of Ted to Voldemort's order for a hit on the werewolf and Metamorphagus to Andromeda babysitting Tonks and Lupin's son, Teddy, when Tonks seeks Lupin out at the Battle of Hogwarts.
From Harry's conversation with her, we learn that Tonks is a Metamorphmagus, and that she went to Hogwarts , but was not made a Prefect , mostly because she was unable to control herself. Most of the time, her hair is shocking pink; it appears that this is her favorite hair color, because she seems to revert to it quite easily. We learn that she is an Auror working for the Ministry of Magic , which is a great help to the Order.
With the Order being largely underground at this time, Tonks still has to work at her regular Auror duties; we see her occasionally, doing guard duty for the Order. At dinner at Headquarters, Tonks amuses Ginny and Hermione by changing the shape of her nose. Apparently, this is a common game, because they keep asking for their favorites. Tonks accompanies the group to the train station to board the Hogwarts Express. For the duration of the trip, she disguises herself as an old lady.
Several times over Christmas break, Tonks visits Headquarters. She accompanies the Weasley family as they visit Arthur Weasley in hospital. Stan Shunpike says that "that bossy lady 'oo is witchu" has paid a premium to get them to Hogwarts quicker, so their stop will be the next but one. Tonks takes part in the battle in the Department of Mysteries in the end of the book where she fires a Stunning Spell at Lucius Malfoy and then begins to duel Bellatrix Lestrange.
Bellatrix, however, quickly knocks Tonks out. She is sitting in the kitchen, apparently talking something serious over with Molly Weasley. Harry is immediately struck by how depressed she looks. Tonks does not stay, but departs almost immediately once Harry has arrived, and Harry observes that Mrs.
Weasley looks troubled. Weasley had apparently been hoping that Bill would express an interest in Tonks, instead of Fleur Delacour , to whom he is now engaged. Ron suggests that with Tonks looking as sad as she does, there was little chance of Mrs. Weasley's hopes being fulfilled. Draco immobilizes him , and after breaking his nose, leaves him on the train as it returns towards London. Tonks, getting onto the train before it has completely left, frees him and returns him to the platform.
She then takes him up to the school, where she sends a message for assistance entering the school grounds. As Hagrid is not present, the messenger reaches Severus Snape , who comes to the gate to let them in. Snape comments that Tonks' Patronus has changed; the one Harry saw was something large and hairy, Snape cuttingly remarks that he had liked the old one better, and it had seemed stronger.
